A one-year moratorium on new data centers, including cryptocurrency mines, was approved by Washington County Commissioners through June 30, 2027. The resolution acknowledges that data mining centers and their operations "require extraordinary levels of electrical power, often equivalent to the consumption of thousands of homes, placing strain on local utilities and potentially increasing costs to residential ratepayers."
It adds that the data mining centers emit "significant continuous noise" from cooling systems and fans. (Remember the Limestone bitcoin operation!)
The decision was made to allow time for the commission to update regulations to address the emerging technology and the stated reason was to give the county's Planning and Zoning staff time to "study such land uses and provide recommendations for zoning text amendments and/or changes to the Washington Conty Zoning Resolution rules ... and to evaluate where data center uses would be appropriate within Washington County."
The next District 2 Commissioner will need to remain hyper-vigilant to help ensure against another Limestone bitcoin-type debacle! If I'm elected, you can count on it!
